“In the Levant and across the Mediterranean, an open door is our universal language—it simply means ‘you are welcome here.’
This painting takes me straight back to a scorching summer day walking through the maze-like alleys of the Quartieri Spagnoli in Napoli. As I passed the ancient stone houses, the doors were left wide open to the street. A local family actually stopped us just to chat, offering us glasses of ice-cold water to beat the heat. That simple, beautiful act of hospitality instantly reminded me of the profound generosity and warmth of the Middle East.
This piece captures that exact spirit. The heavy, textured oil paint brings the rough stone walls and climbing flowers to life, radiating that same sun-baked warmth you find in the ancient Haras (alleyways) of Damascus. I chose this painting because standing in front of it feels like receiving that very same invitation—a reminder of the kindness of strangers and the universal comfort of a welcoming home.”
